Eating Disorder & Addiction Therapy in Westchester County, NY
Healing asks more than giving something up.
Eating disorders, substance use, gambling, and other compulsive behaviors often begin as ways of finding relief from an inner world that has become too painful or difficult to inhabit. What may now be causing enormous suffering often began as an attempt to soothe, escape, control, or survive something we had not yet found another way to hold.

Recovery Happens in Stages
Practical change and deeper healing can belong to the same process.
Especially in the beginning, insight is not enough. There is often very practical work to be done: learning how to move through cravings, identifying the people, places, feelings, and situations that trigger urges, and becoming aware of the internal dialogue that can quietly lead from a trigger to picking up a substance or returning to an old behavior.
As greater stability develops, we can begin working more deeply with what lies beneath these patterns. I use EMDR in a focused way to help reprocess triggers and the experiences associated with them, so that old cues no longer carry the same emotional charge or automatically lead toward the same response.
Together with IFS and somatic work, this allows us not only to interrupt an addictive cycle, but to understand and care for the parts of you that have relied upon it.
“Recovery is not simply about giving something up.”
It is about becoming increasingly able to inhabit your own inner life—until being with yourself begins to feel less like something you need to escape and more like a place you can and want to live and create from.
With eating disorders, what we struggle with cannot simply be removed from our lives. Healing therefore involves developing a different relationship not only with eating, but with nourishment, the body, control, emotion, and ourselves.
How Therapy for Eating Disorders & Addiction Works
Therapy may draw on several approaches, depending on what is most useful at each stage of recovery.
-
EMDR for Triggers and Trauma
Reprocessing triggers and the experiences connected to them, so old cues lose their emotional charge.
-
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Getting to know the parts of you that have relied on a substance or behavior, and what they have been trying to protect.
-
Somatic Therapy
Working with the body to notice cravings, stress and emotion, and to build the capacity to stay present with them.
-
Harm Reduction & Motivational Interviewing
Meeting you where you are, and building on your own reasons and readiness for change.
-
CBT/DBT-Informed Approaches
Practical skills for moving through cravings, managing difficult emotions and responding differently to triggers.

Yes. Especially early in recovery, this is combined with practical work on moving through cravings and identifying triggers.

This is very common. Insight alone is rarely enough. Healing deepens when we can experience, not simply understand, the care our protective parts need. Sometimes healing happens through an experience that reaches somewhere words and insight alone cannot.
-
Most people begin with weekly sessions, which helps build continuity and momentum. Over time, we can adjust the frequency together based on what feels most supportive.
